Edmond Santa Fe’s Demarius Robinson helping Wolves rewrite last year’s wrongs in 4-1 start

MUSTANG — Edmond Santa Fe head coach Kyle White wasn't surprised when he heard the number.

However, Wolves junior running back Demarius Robinson’s eyes lit up — pleasantly stunned as he read his box score.

"Wait, I had how many yards rushing?" Robinson questioned, making sure he read his statistics correctly. "Oh wow. I didn't even know I had that ball that much."

Robinson carried the ball 35 times for the Wolves — finishing the game with 300 yards and four touchdowns on Friday night. His biggest run came late in the fourth quarter after seeing a gap at the line of scrimmage and bursting loose for a 77-yard touchdown score.

The big play sealed Edmond Santa Fe's 56-49 victory of Class 6A-I foe Mustang on Friday night.

"As I head into my games this year, I know I've got to play each one like it's my last," Robinson said. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound running back missed most of his sophomore season with a sports hernia.

"Last year is in the past, but now, I'm taking over. That's been my mindset and it always will be," Robinson said. "Every single time you see me touch that football I'm looking to score. All the credit in the world goes to our offensive line though. They're what keeps us going every week, they continue to set the tone for us."

Behind an offensive line led by three-star tackle and OU commit Josh Aisosa, the win marked Robinson’s second 300-yard, multi-touchdown performance in the last three weeks. He found the end zone six times and rushed for 349 yards in a Week 3 blowout win over Class 6A-I rival Edmond Memorial. The Edmond native now has 1,223 yards rushing and 125 carries on the season through just five games.

In the backfield alongside Robinson is quarterback Daniel Newton, who also had a big night of his own in Mustang. The junior had 122 total yards and three combined touchdowns in the Friday night win, running the ball on the ground 18 times for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

With Newton, Robinson and Aisosa leading the way, Edmond Santa Fe has its sights set on competing for a state title in December.

"We're real confident in our ability to shock some people down the line," Newton said, "but we always talk about being confident but not comfortable. When you have one of the best offensive line's that this state has to offer, it can be hard to look at it that way at times.

"We've still got some work to do though. We can't be complacent, we've got to make some things happen — and that starts with me."

Following an unprecedented 1-9 finish to the season just a year ago, a 4-1 start to the 2023 season seems to signal that Edmond Santa Fe is back to their winning ways of the past decade.

"We've really shown a lot of maturity this year," said Wolves coach Kyle White. "I think what you're seeing us put on display every week now is the fire, the drive and the fight that the ultimate competitors we have on this team play with. I couldn't be more proud of this group of young men."

White believes that the Wolves' chances of winning their first-ever state title have been further elevated with an all-state running back of Robinson's caliber in the backfield.

"I'm just motivated to be the very best player and athlete that there is," Robinson said. "If I can do that and help us win every week, I'll be satisfied. No matter the situation, we're still going to keep playing Santa Fe football. Nothing will ever be different — and I love it that way."
