Allison Heathcock felt the need to make a statement.

The Huskies star guard was conscious of questions from naysayers, curious if Edmond North could sustain its recent success. The inquiry seemed fair to some given the loss of NC State signee Laci Steele and three-star guard Elle Papahronis, who graduated in the spring.

Yet, on Saturday, the Huskies dismissed the narratives.

Edmond North (8-0, 6-0 District 6A-1) topped tournament host Mustang 49-26 to win the Bank7 Mustang Holiday Classic for the third consecutive year. The Huskies' defense played stellar out of the gate as Heathcock's 19 points, eight rebounds and two steals led the reigning two-time defending Class 6A state champions to victory.

Heathcock was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player following the game.

"Whenever we go out on the floor, our goal is to outwork everyone in the opposite colors," Heathcock said. "A lot of people have counted us out and tried to say we're not the same team we've been for the past few years. I want to show that we're still the team to beat and that we are still on top."

The Huskies' suffocating defense dominated the Broncos (7-4, 3-3 District 6A-1) from out the gate, opening the game on a 14-4 run before the end of the first quarter. Heathcock, a Creighton commit, led all scorers with nine points by halftime as Edmond North went into the break up 14.

In the second half, Heathcock began to get the others involved more. Huskies' starting point guard KK Peeler started to heat up, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the second half while finishing with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

However, Edmond North's smothering second half defense helped pave the way to victory.

"We work on our identity of what we are and what we do every day," Huskies head coach Pete Papahronis said. "We just have great, selfless kids who dedicate themselves to the team first. When you have those kind of players, your system, culture and identity will remain the same. "

Edmond North looks to extend its win streak to nine games on the road at Moore on Friday.

Roman Miller had an itch to redeem himself.

Despite helping the Broncos advance to the tournament finals in a 15-point win over Del City a day prior, his poor play in the semifinal victory ate away at him for nearly 24 hours.

Disheartened by his six turnovers — even with his 13 points — Miller knew he could elevate his game into another gear.

"Getting hot early on gave me a ton of confidence for sure," Miller said following the game. "I just wanted to bounce back and get a good win because we lost to them last year in the championship on our home court. We needed to get our get back, so I'm glad we were able to do that."

Miller's 24-point, 11-rebound performance helped lift the Broncos to a 65-31 blowout victory over Putnam North (5-5, 1-4 District 6A-1) to win their hosted Holiday Classic Tournament for the second time in three years. The 6-foot-4 junior forward received Most Valuable Player honors from the tournament due to his electric showing on Saturday.

The Broncos (8-3, 3-2 District 6A-1) led by just five points at the end of the first quarter before embarking on a 16-4 run at the end of the first half. The run was sparked by a stellar outing from sophomore forward Jaden Johnson, who finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals. Jaden's twin brother, Jaytee, added 11 points and five rebounds in just 13 minutes.

The second half featured more of the same for Mustang as they outscored the Panthers 37-20 after the halftime break.

Jaden Johnson and star freshman guard Tyson Pogi's stifling defense at the point of attack proved vital in the win. The duo's presence caused problems for Putnam North's lead guards, Anthony Leonard and Khai Brown — who shot a combined 7-for-25 on the night.

"Our focus was just to play way better on-ball defense than we had in our first two games," Pogi said.

"That's a great team over there, so seeing that we could keep them to just 30 points is a big deal for us. This tournament was good run for us and now we have to keep getting progressively better throughout the season."
