Duke basketball’s Jon Scheyer doubles down on dangers of court-storming
Duke basketball coach Jon Scheyer says “the ACC needs to do something” about court-storming after Kyle Filipowski was injured following the Blue Devils’ loss at Wake Forest.
“There has to be something done to protect our guys – to protect not just our guys, but any team that’s in that situation,” Scheyer said Monday during the ACC’s weekly coaches teleconference.
After the buzzer sounded at Joel Coliseum on Saturday, Filipowski was caught in the sea of fans and appeared to injure his right knee. While Filipowski received most of the attention as he limped off the court, Scheyer pointed out the situations of several other players at that moment.
“Bottom line, however people feel, that can’t happen,” Scheyer said.
“Even in retrospect, you’re watching it back and there’s a ton of attention on Flip. But if you go back and watch Jared McCain, there’s a student face to face with him; it’s a dangerous situation. Mark (Mitchell), the same thing. The heroes of that whole thing were our student managers. Our student managers are running on the floor to protect our guys.”

Describing the situation at Wake Forest as a “failure,” Scheyer went on to say he’s been in “close touch” with Duke athletics director Nina King and Paul Brazeau, the ACC’s senior associate commissioner for men’s basketball.
The SEC fine for court storming is $100,000, but – as Scheyer noted – the ACC doesn’t have disciplinary measures in place for when fans rush the court.
In addition to fines, Scheyer mentioned improving preparation for how schools handle a court-storming situation. After Saturday's game, Scheyer said even waiting 10 seconds could help. Wake Forest fans started to flood the court right before the final buzzer.
“I worry about things you can control and I don’t get caught up in narratives or outside noise or whatever,” Scheyer said.
“In this case, it comes down to the well-being of our guys. It would be wrong of me not to speak up. I think it would be wrong of me not to speak up for all the student-athletes that can be put in this position. Something needs to change now before something serious happens.”
After three straight ACC road games, the Blue Devils (21-6, 12-4 ACC) host Louisville (8-19, 3-13) on Wednesday (7 p.m., ESPN) at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Even with only one road game remaining – at NC State on March 4 – Scheyer said “we shouldn’t wait until next year” to address the dangers of court-storming.
“Something should be done right now,” he said.
“. … At the end of the day, players and coaches and officials are the only people that belong on a court. Yes, something should be done now, like immediately.”
