Last month, Louisville basketball recruit Tae Davis opened his recruitment in the wake of the Cardinals' coaching change.

His brother is hitting the open market, too.

Dre Davis entered the transfer portal Tuesday, according to VerbalCommits.com, which tracks player movement in college basketball. He's the fifth Louisville player to enter the transfer portal this offseason, the third since Kenny Payne was named head coach on March 18.

The move isn't entirely surprising, given Tae Davis' decision. But Dre Davis sounded optimistic about Payne at the coach's introduction. Payne met with Davis, El Ellis and Jae'Llyn Withers the morning of March 18 and had a news conference hours later.

“The biggest thing he always pushed was, ‘I want to be able to push you young kids to be able to reach your goals, and if you’re not a dream chaser or you’re not striving to be at your very best, then I don’t want you,’” Davis said when Payne was introduced. “That’s something I want to be around.”

But the three players present that day — many of the Cardinals were out of town for spring break — all said they'd yet to make a decision. Ellis is among the U of L players to have announced his return. As of Tuesday morning, Withers had not made an announcement.

Dre Davis played 50 games at Louisville, starting 40. The 6-foot-5 wing averaged 28.9 minutes in 20 games as a freshman and 20 in 30 games as a sophomore, but his numbers across the board were similar in both seasons. For his career, he's averaging 7.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.9 assists.

His field-goal shooting jumped from 39.8% as a freshman to 42.7% as a sophomore even as his 3-point field-goal percentage dipped from 25% to 20.8%.

Davis joins guard Noah Locke, forwards Samuell Williamson and Matt Cross and center Gabe Wiznitzer in entering the transfer portal this offseason. Ellis, center Sydney Curry and wing Mike James — who missed his freshman season with an Achilles injury — have announced they'll return to U of L.
