Dominant Ta'Niya Latson performance leads FSU women's basketball to win over Boston College

It was once again the Ta'Niya Latson show Thursday at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.

Latson put together a 16-point second quarter to help Florida State women's basketball cruise to an 84-71 victory over Boston College in front of 1,744 fans.

The talented sophomore finished with 34 points to lead FSU (20-8, 11-5 ACC), which clinched its 10th 20-win season in the last 11 seasons. It was Latson's 14th 30-point performance of her career and the seventh this season. She has six in ACC play.

FSU improved to 12-3 at home for the season, limiting the Eagles (11-17, 3-12) to 27% shooting from the 3-point range and 36% overall shooting.

The Seminoles lost 77-71 in overtime to Boston College last year in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Jan. 8, 2023. But with the bounceback victory now lead the all-time series 19-3.

Junior forward Makayla Timpson finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, ending a streak of five straight games with a double-double. She was one off of the school record for the longest streak in school history, Cherry Rivers (1978-79). O'Mariah Gordon added 15 points.

Freshman Avery Treadwell finished with career-highs with seven points and five rebounds in a career-high 12 minutes, while Brianna 'Snoop' Turnage finished with a career-best six assists and added nine rebounds. Her previous high for assists was four (three occasions), most recently in the last game against Miami.

Teya Sidberry led the Eagles with 19 points, while T'yana Tood had 17.

Timpson and Sara Bejedi were each recognized before Thursday’s game for surpassing the 1,000-point marks in their careers. Both players reached the milestone in FSU’s 71-63 win at Wake Forest last Thursday.

"I am proud of a lot of things we did tonight to get this one done," FSU head coach Brooke Wyckoff said following the win. "We took care of the ball really well against a team that forces a lot of turnovers. Ta'Niya had a great individual performance. Realy proud of her production and the way she was locked in."

Here are our three takeaways.

Ta'niya Latson's dominant performance

Latson's 34-point performance mirrored her 34-point performance against Notre Dame on Feb. 11. She also shot 14-of-25 in that game, but connected on four shots from 3-point range.

She was 0-for-3 Thursday from beyond the arc, but a perfect 6-of-6 mark at the line helped her achieve the same point total differently.

"The way she can get to the basket, move her body in the air, and finish is something I've never seen, Wyckoff said of Latson's latest performance.

"There's always something new that comes out when she jumps up and finishes. I was just really proud of her focus and the way she leads us. ... It never gets old."

Latson's career-high was 35 in a performance against rival Florida earlier this season on Nov. 17, 2023. Latson tied her career-best of 14 field goals. She added four rebounds, four assists, three steals and five turnovers.

The school record is 40 points by Natasha Howard, something Latson is aiming for.

"I haven't been starting good in the first quarter," Latson said of her 1-of-6 start in the first quarter.

"But something clicks when I sit down and just see how the defense is playing. But it is fun. It is very fun. I want more. That's just how I am."

Latson was asked 'You want more what?'

She responded with a laugh, "I want more points."

Latson added she hopes to score 41 points in the season and home-finale for the Seminoles on Sunday, March 3 vs. Clemson.

Avery Treadwell's breakout game

With forward Sakyia White donning a medical mask and not available for FSU Thursday night, Treadwell, a former standout a Bearden High in Knoxville, Tennessee, earned a career-high in playing time.

Treadwell rewarded her team with seven points and five rebounds in 12 minutes. All represented career highs.

She started the night off by grabbing an offensive board off a miss by Latson, put the ball back up and finished through contact to get the 3-point play. In the second quarter, she was called for an intentional foul when she elbowed too hard going for a defensive rebound, displaying her toughness.

Treadwell added a block in the fourth quarter and then recorded her fifth rebound to set a new career high in the fourth on an offensive rebound. She then added a layup with 2:43 left to push the Seminoles lead to a game-high 82-60.

"She's a hard worker, she's on the practice team and gives us buckets," Latson said. "Even after practice, she's working with coach [Bill Ferrera]. I'm just excited to see her growth throughout the season."

The Seminoles entered Thursday night tied for fourth in the ACC in 3-point percentage (34%) and makes per game at 7.9.

FSU made just one shot and got up 14 3-pointers in the victory over the Eagles. Instead, FSU shot 56% from 2-point range and got to the basket often, scoring 54 points in the paint.

Wyckoff and Latson credited taking what the defense was giving them to the different offensive attacks for the team.

"It was clear in the first and second quarters when we attacked the basket, good things were happening," Wyckoff said. "We didn't take as many 3-point shots and we didn't hit a lot of them, but I loved how we got to the basket and got the ball into the paint.
