Dolphins report card: How we graded Miami in Week 2 loss vs. Bills

.
.

The Miami Dolphins were riding high after a Week 1 comeback win, but Thursday night brought the team crashing back down to earth. The Dolphins lost 31-10 against their AFC East rival Buffalo Bills at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday making it five straight victories against Miami for the Bills and 12 in the last 13 matchups.

Aside from a few players who had solid performances, the Dolphins failed an early season team test. With several new experienced players added to the mix, especially on defense, a team persona of toughness was supposed to carry over from Week 1. It did not.

Adding injury to insult, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovialoa suffered a concussion on a third quarter run. Backup Skylar Thompson took the reins, but the game was already decided at that point. It wasn't a pretty performance, which was the same old story in South Florida. The Dolphins remain unable to get over the hump of beating the Bills.

Aside from a gritty performance from running back De'Von Achane, the Dolphins offense sputtered all night. Achane had a career high 22 carries, scored his 13th touchdown in as many career games, tailed 96 rushing yards, and added seven catches for 69 yards.

Prior to his injury, Tagovailoa and his targets weren't on the same page often. He threw two first quarter interceptions. He targeted Grant DuBose on the first which hit the receiver on the shoulder pad and ended up in the arms of a Bills defender. The second pick was thrown to Robbie Chosen, who appeared to cut off his route early for another miscommunication interception. Tagovailoa threw his third pick while trying to toss the ball away, which was returned for six points for the Bills.

Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle totaled just 65 receiving yards on a combined seven catches. Rookie running back Jaylen Wright saw five rushing attempts for just four yards.

While not a gaudy stat line, quarterback Josh Allen showed why he's a Dolphins' beater with his scrambling and throwing ability. He went 13-of-19 passing with 139 yards and a touchdown to running back James Cook. The Bills' runner, who is from South Florida, added two rushing touchdowns for a trio of scores, including a 49-yard burst.

Anthony Weaver's defense was unable to strop Allen when he used his feet to buy time. The Dolphins weren't able to generate any sacks and gave up 5.5 net yards per offensive play.

There were a few individual performances on defense that stood out, namely linebacker David Long Jr, who led the team in tackles with 11, including two for loss. Jordyn Brooks also had a few solid reps, and showed his coverage ability from the linebacker spot on a pass attempt to the endzone. The Dolphins rushing defense was unable to stop Cook, who averaged 7.1yards per carry.

Not a whole lot of work from Jason Sanders on Thursday, who hit his only field goal attempt of the night, a 34-yarder. Punter Jake Bailey had one punt which had a net of 48 yards. The new dynamic kickoff rules had the Bills kicking off to touchbacks, so no Dolphins return was made Thursday night.

Coaching: D-

The grade here could easily be that of a failing mark. Mike McDaniel was outcoached and play calling became predictable. The Dolphins picked up a third-and-one with Alec Ingold early in the game, but he repeated that same call in the same situation, and it resulted in a loss.

McDaniel chose to go for it on fourth down five times and Miami converted just once. The Bills outplayed the Dolphins, and McDaniel was out-coached all night.

The Dolphins didn't flip the script or change the narrative against the Bills. So the same story remains for a team looking to shed an image and take the next steps. With uncertainty now at quarterback, the Dolphins will have to wait for a prognosis with Tagovailoa and at this moment, Skylar Thompson is the next man up.

The Dolphins are now 1-1, and have a few extra days of rest and preparation until they travel across the country to play the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3.
