Dolphins' Jaelan Phillips has successful surgery, but rehab could take a year

MIAMI GARDENS — Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips has undergone successful surgery on his Achilles.

“Surgery was a success!!” Phillips wrote in announcing the news early Wednesday on social media. “Day 1 of many (prayer emoji). I’m built for this.”

Coach Mike McDaniel said Phillips had a more conventional-type surgery on his Achilles compared with the newer procedure that was performed on Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Typically, such injuries and repairs require about a year of rehab.

The news comes just as the Jets opened the 21-day window for the return of Rodgers. He could even make his Jets debut on Dec. 17 in Miami against the Dolphins.

Rodgers had reached out to Phillips to offer advice and support before the surgery. Rodgers underwent an operation that could have him back on the field in approximately three months, but it’s important to note that the strain on the Achilles is different for a quarterback compared to an edge rusher, whose game is heavily dependent on burst off the line.

“All I know is that it went well, that we’re very happy,” McDaniel said. “It's not about how quick recovery can be for him. It's more about with position, he plays with his explosiveness, and you know, it's about getting him back, which I'm very, very confident that that can happen.”

The Dolphins have placed Phillips on injured reserve and signed veteran Jason Pierre-Paul to fill the roster spot. Pierre-Paul will wear No. 90.

Players not spotted in the portion of practice open to reporters Wednesday were Jevon Holland, Terron Armstead, Tyreek Hill, Durham Smythe and Kendall Lamm. De’Von Achane and Chris Brooks were in uniform.
