Dick Soergel, once a 3-sport star for Oklahoma State Cowboys, passes away

Former Oklahoma State three-sport standout and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Famer Dick Soergel passed away this week at the age of 85.

Soergel earned nine varsity letters as a football, basketball and baseball player at OSU from 1957-60. He played in five NCAA postseason events and won a total of 125 games with 55 losses over his career.

A 1956 graduate of Capitol Hill High School in Oklahoma City, Soergel’s most notable accomplishment as a pitcher for Cowboy baseball. He was the winning pitcher in the 1959 national championship game against Arizona. A year later, he was an All-Big Eight and All-America selection as a pitcher.

Playing at a time when freshmen were ineligible for varsity competition, Soergel led the OSU football team in passing yards all three of his seasons. He was 10th nationally in passing in 1959 with 1,102 yards and got drafted by the New England Patriots in 1960.

He also helped the Cowboy basketball squad to an Elite Eight appearance in 1958, appearing in 63 games over three seasons.

Soergel was inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and into the Oklahoma State Athletics Hall of Honor in 1999.

In addition to his exploits at OSU, Soergel helped Capitol Hill to four state championships: two in football (1953-54), one in basketball (1954) and one in baseball (1956).
