Diamondbacks show moving tribute in postseason for Hazen family with first pitch

When welcoming back the postseason to Chase Field, there wasn’t a more fitting choice than to have Diamondbacks General Manager Mike Hazen’s four sons throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The four Hazen boys — Charlie, 17; John, 16; Teddy, 15 and Sam, 13 — set the tone for the NLDS Game 3 against the Los Angeles Dodgers when they took the mound and threw to Corbin Carroll, Ketel Marte, Christian Walker, and manager Torey Lovullo in front of Wednesday's sell-out crowd.

Hazen and his family tragically lost their wife and mother, Nicole, to glioblastoma, a malignant brain cancer, last August. The diagnosis took a toll on the family as Mike took a leave of absence to spend time with his family during the 2021 season.

Since then, Hazen has been splitting his time between his duties with the team and his duties as a father. He’s been granted flexibility with the organization and prioritizes his sons’ lives, often leaving early during weekday homestands to help around the house.

Each of his four boys are responsible for his future with the Diamondbacks. After last season, Hazen asked all of them if they wanted him to continue as a GM and if the vote wasn’t unanimous, he would stop.

All four gave him the green light and earlier this month, he signed a multi-year extension that is guaranteed through 2028 with a club option for an additional year.
