DeVante Parker signing as Eagles' 3rd wide receiver. What it means for Quez Watkins' future

The Eagles are hoping to address their third wide receiver issues by agreeing to contract terms with veteran DeVante Parker to a one-year contract.

ESPN was the first to report the deal, worth $4.69 million guaranteed. The Eagles are paying only $1.2 million of the deal, with the Patriots paying the rest, according to the report.

It adds to a busy second day for the Eagles during the three-day negotiating period before the new league year begins Wednesday at 4 p.m. Earlier on Tuesday, the Eagles reached an agreement with free agent offensive lineman Matt Hennessy, and re-signed punter Braden Mann and long snapper Rick Lovato.

The Eagles also added to the offense on Monday by agreeing to terms with free agent running back Saquon Barkley on a three-year deal worth as much as $37.75 million. They also signed defensive end Bryce Huff to a three-year deal worth as much as $51.1 million.

The Parker signing likely means the end of Quez Watkins' Eagles career. Watkins had two straight disappointing seasons after the Eagles hoped he would be their third wide receiver behind stars A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

Watkins, who had 647 yards receiving in 2021, had just 15 catches for 142 yards last season. He was benched towards the end of the season before getting more than half of his total production (8 catches, 93 yards) in the regular-season finale against the Giants.

Smith missed that game with an ankle injury, and Brown left in the first quarter with a knee injury.

Parker, 31, is entering his 10th season in the NFL. He spent the first eight with the Miami Dolphins, who made him their first-round pick in 2015, and the last two with the New England Patriots.

Parker had 394 yards receiving on 33 receptions last season in 13 games. The receiving yards were his lowest since 2018, when he had 309 yards in 11 games.

Still, Parker's production last season was better than any Eagles wide receiver behind Brown and Smith, who had 1,456 yards and 1,066 yards receiving, respectively. In fact, Parker's totals were just behind the combined totals of the Eagles' other four wide receivers in Watkins, Julio Jones, Olamide Zaccheus and Britain Covey.

Those four combined for 40 catches for 422 yards. Watkins, Jones and Zaccheaus are all free agents, and it's likely that none will return. Covey is the Eagles' punt returner.

Parker might not improve from his those totals from last season. But that's to be expected somewhat with Brown, Smith and tight end Dallas Goedert getting the vast majority of the targets.

It's possible that the Eagles aren't done at wide receiver, either. They could add at least another one in the draft and/or pursue another free agent.

But the Eagles have liked Parker for a long time. They were looking for a wide receiver in the first round in 2015. Parker was taken No. 14 overall. The Eagles, picking 20th, took Nelson Agholor.

Parker only played against the Eagles once, in 2019 while with the Dolphins. He burned them for 7 catches, 159 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Dolphins' 37-31 upset win. He didn't play against the Eagles as a rookie in 2015, or in the season opener last September due to injury.

Now he'll be playing for them.
