WELCOME BACK: Tigers recall Spencer Torkelson after 58 games in Triple-A Toledo

Game notes: The Tigers are probably hoping the Carlos Rodón of 2023 shows up on the Comerica Park mound today, rather than the Carlos Rodón of 2022. After tearing up the Tigers in 2022, with 14 strikeouts and just two runs allowed in 13 innings (over two appearances), Rodón was tagged for seven runs in 3 2/3 innings in his lone start against the Tigers, Sept. 7 in New York. In all, Rodón owns a 5.21 ERA in 12 appearances against the Tigers, dating back to 2015.

Tigers right-hander Keider Montero, like his fellow rookies mostly populating the Detroit lineup, doesn’t have nearly as long a track record as Rodón. Most recently, he has allowed nine runs in 18 August innings, while striking out 13 and walking six. That peaked last week in an Aug. 6 start in Seattle in which he struck out a career-high eight in six innings.

After today’s matinee, the Tigers and Yankees will pack their gear and head east to play in Sunday night’s Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, on ESPN. The Tigers then get Monday off before heading to Chicago for a pair of series in the Windy City: First up, the Cubbies for three games on Tuesday-Thursday, followed by a four-game visit to the South Side and the woeful White Sox beginning Friday.
