Detroit Tigers sign slugging first baseman Keston Hiura to minor-league contract

LAKELAND, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers have signed Keston Hiura, who played four seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, to a minor-league contract with an invitation to MLB spring training, according to multiple sources.

The 27-year-old will earn $2 million if he makes the majors, with the chance to earn more in bonuses. He spent all of last season in Triple-A Nashville with the Brewers.

He plays first base and left field.

The low-risk deal could pay off for the Tigers because Hiura fills a need for depth at first base and also has experience in the outfield. He has a track record of hitting for power in the majors and minors, crushing 23 homers in 85 Triple-A games last season.
