Detroit Tigers' Riley Greene to undergo season-ending right elbow surgery

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene is scheduled to undergo right elbow surgery.

The 22-year-old, who hasn't played since Sept. 1 due to a right elbow sprain, will have surgery Wednesday in Dallas, performed by Texas Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister.

Elbow surgery officially ends Greene's 2023 season.

The extent of the injury will be determined during the procedure.

Greene, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2019 draft, received three opinions on his right elbow once the inflammation subsided. The first opinion came from the Tigers' medical staff, followed by a second opinion from Meister. Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the Los Angeles Dodgers' team physician, provided the third and final opinion.

The Tigers plan to provide another update on the specific type of procedure, and the projected timetable for Greene's return, once the extent of the injury is determined upon the completion of the surgery.

For now, the Tigers have described the procedure as "surgical intervention."

Greene, who has suffered three injuries in the past two seasons, hit .288 with 11 home runs, 35 walks and 114 strikeouts over 99 games in the 2023 season, posting a .796 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

Greene suffered his right elbow injury on a diving catch in left-center field Sept. 1 against the Chicago White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. (He bats from the left side of the plate and throws with his left arm.) Earlier in the season, he missed 34 games — from May 31 to July 7 — with a stress reaction in his left fibula.

Greene also fractured a bone in his right foot on a foul ball during a spring training game in April 2022 and didn't make his MLB debut until June 2022. The injuries have limited him to 192 games in his two-year MLB career.

After elbow surgery, Greene is scheduled to return to Detroit. He will stay with the Tigers for the final week of the season. The season finale is Oct. 1 against the Cleveland Guardians at Comerica Park.

Alex Faedo placed on injured list

The Tigers placed right-handed reliever Alex Faedo on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right middle finger blister. Right-handed reliever Brendan White was recalled from Triple-A Toledo to take Faedo's spot on the active roster.

The injury is retroactive to Saturday, which means Faedo could return to the Tigers for the final day of the season.

The 27-year-old has a 4.45 ERA with 20 walks and 58 strikeouts over 64⅔ innings in 15 games (12 starts). He has thrown six scoreless innings with two walks and seven strikeouts in three appearances since the Tigers moved him to the bullpen in early September.

Positive news

Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez exited Monday's 8-3 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers with a scapula spasm, which the Tigers described Tuesday as "the onset of mid-back spasms."

A mound visit from manager A.J. Hinch and assistant athletic trainer Matt Rankin led to his departure in the fourth inning after throwing 70 pitches. Rodriguez, an eight-year MLB veteran, has a 4.94 ERA in 13 starts since returning July 5 from a ruptured pulley in his left index finger.

On the positive side, Rodriguez hopes to make his next scheduled start, but nothing has been determined by the Tigers. The 30-year-old is lined up to start Sunday against the Oakland Athletics in what would be the penultimate start of his 2023 season.
