Detroit Tigers' Reese Olson leaves start after two innings with right shoulder soreness

TORONTO — Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson didn't take the mound for the third inning of Saturday's game.

The 24-year-old, who has a 3.23 ERA in 19 starts, exited his start against the Toronto Blue Jays with right shoulder soreness after completing two innings at Rogers Centre, throwing 30 pitches. Olson wasn't made available to speak with reporters after the game.

The severity of the shoulder injury is unknown.

"He came off the mound after the second inning, kind of shaking his arm, and said he didn't feel very good," manager A.J. Hinch said after Saturday's 7-3 win. "We quickly rushed him downstairs to get a quick evaluation, but once he said his arm was bugging him, we immediately pulled him and had to scurry to get somebody up and going."

Hinch doesn't know if Olson will be placed on the injured list. For now, Olson will travel to Detroit for additional medical tests on his right arm from doctors with the Tigers.

"A series of things are going to happen in the next 48 hours," Hinch said. "He'll go see the doctors, getting all the tests, and we'll hope for the best. Generally, I don't love when a pitcher has to come out pertaining to his arm, but we need to do a few things before we're going to know anything."

Olson struggled to locate his pitches in the first and second innings against the Blue Jays, leading to two walks, but he worked out of trouble with a pair of inning-ending double plays.

Hinch tried to explain what Olson felt on the mound.

"He said it didn't feel particularly bad, but it didn't feel particularly good," Hinch said. "I think it was a couple of pitches before his last pitch. He still was able to get the double-play ball, but I think it was a couple of pitches of him feeling uncomfortable."

Catcher Jake Rogers shared his perspective.

"I saw (catching coach Ryan) Sienko getting the wristband ready for someone else," Rogers said. "I didn't even know. I was like, 'What are you doing?' He's like, 'Oh, Faedo is in the game.' I said, 'What happened to Reese?' It was tough losing him, and I hope he's all right."

The Tigers replaced Olson with right-handed reliever Alex Faedo for the third inning. Olson owns a 3.23 ERA with 31 walks and 92 strikeouts across 103 innings in 19 starts.
