Detroit Tigers pitchers Jack O'Loughlin, Elvis Alvarado among minor-league free agents

Left-hander Jack O'Loughlin, who pitched for Team Australia in the World Baseball Classic, ascended from High-A West Michigan to Triple-A Toledo in the 2023 season. He skipped Double-A Erie and provided organizational depth on the doorstep of the big leagues.

Now, O'Loughlin is a minor-league free agent.

Twenty-four players from the Detroit Tigers became minor-league free agents Wednesday, including O'Loughlin. The 23-year-old posted a 3.99 ERA with 52 walks and 118 strikeouts over 124 innings in 27 games (25 starts), but he had a 4.78 ERA with the Mud Hens.

Ten of those players have MLB experience: Feliciano, Papierski, Solak, Bristo, De Jesus, García, Peters (as an outfielder before becoming a pitcher), Wingenter, Clay and Vasquez.

Solak, Bristo, Wingenter and Vasquez played for the Tigers in 2023, but among those four players, Wingenter and Vasquez received the most playing time and finished the season on the Tigers' active roster.

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN: Tigers' Trey Wingenter throws two nasty pitches. He just needs to stay healthy

Wingenter signed a minor-league contract last offseason earned a role on the Opening Day roster coming out of spring training, which triggered a $1 million base salary for the 2023 season. He suffered a shoulder injury in mid-April and failed to establish himself in the big-league bullpen.

Wingenter, 29, logged a 5.82 ERA with seven walks and 22 strikeouts over 17 innings in 17 relief appearances; Vasquez, 30, posted an 8.31 ERA with nine walks and nine strikeouts over 8⅔ innings in 12 relief appearances.

Both Wingenter and Vasquez cleared waivers, as part of their offseason removal from the 40-man roster, and elected free agency rather than an assignment in Triple-A Toledo.

Alvarado, a 24-year-old who features a 100 mph fastball, earned an invitation to big-league spring training in 2023, though he wasn't under consideration to make the Opening Day roster. He suffered a right elbow sprain during spring training and didn't pitch competitively until early June.

Alvarado registered a 5.18 ERA with 14 walks and 40 strikeouts over 33 innings in 31 games with Low-A Lakeland (five games), High-A West Michigan (25 games) and Double-A Erie (one game).

Papierski, 27, spent the entire season as one of the catchers in Triple-A Toledo, hitting .266 with eight home runs, 42 walks and 65 strikeouts across 77 games.

De Jesus, 26, had a 2.13 ERA over eight games (12⅔ innings) for the Tigers in 2022; García, 25, had a 5.35 ERA over 33 games (75⅔ innings) for the Tigers in 2020-22.
