LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE: Detroit Tigers draft pick Brady Cerkownyk has lightning bat, chance 'to be special'
Game notes: Matt Manning has looked great ever since returning from an early season foot injury.
Manning was strong in his return, struggled a bit in his second start, allowing four runs, but helped the Tigers throw a combined no-hitter in his third start and was again sharp in his fourth start, allowing just one earned run and zero walks against the Royals. Batters are hitting a measly .158 against Manning in July and his ERA has dropped down to 3.38 after peaking at one point at 4.48.
When you combine Manning's recent form with a now healthy Eduardo Rodriguez and Tarik Skubal, plus All-Star Michael Lorenzen, as well as rookie Reese Olson, the Tigers actually have a pretty fierce starting rotation, something that seemed totally unfeasibly just a few weeks ago.
FUTURE TIGER: Detroit Tigers sign 3rd-round pick LHP Paul Wilson to over-slot deal
Earlier this month, our Evan Petzold wrote about how the Tigers had mastered "the bullpen game," which they were forced to use on numerous occasions because so many of their starting pitchers were injured.
Unfortunately for Tigers fans, this rotation may be short-lived. The MLB trade deadline is on Aug. 1 and even though the Tigers are still within striking distance of first place in the AL Central, they may be forced to make a decision on Rodriguez and Lorenzen, who could walk away for nothing this offseason.
However, as Matt Manning takes the mound on Saturday, Tigers fans can watch comfortably knowing they won't be letting the young righty go anywhere anytime soon.
