Game notes: The clock is ticking for the Tigers to climb up the wild-card standings, and Sunday offers another huge opportunity for manager A.J. Hinch's squad.

The Tigers are coming off a rousing 6-4 win in 10 innings on Saturday, and are a half-game by Minnesota for the final wild-card spot and one game back of Kansas City for the second spot. Both the Twins and Royals hold tiebreakers over the Tigers. Minnesota plays a doubleheader Sunday at Boston after a rainout Saturday. The Royals have lost six straight and host San Francisco in the series finale. Baltimore owns the top wild-card berth, up five games on the Tigers with seven to play.

A little bit of the Tigers' momentum was snatched by Corbin Burnes and the Orioles on Friday in the series opener as the Tigers looked baffled by the All-Star Game starter for the second time in less than a week. The loss gave the Tigers less wiggle room down the stretch, and makes Sunday's finale an important chance to close out a series against one of the AL's top squads before things get a little bit easier against the Tampa Bay Rays and then a lot easier against the Chicago White Sox.

The Tigers have fully embraced the element of surprise when it comes to who will be taking the mound to start the game. The strategy back fired on Friday when Holton, the Tigers' second best pitcher behind Tarik Skubal, started the game by giving up two runs in the first inning and then handed the ball to rookie Keider Montero, who surrendered four home runs in a blowout loss.

However, Hinch is not a manager who overreacts, and the Tigers have found tons of success with the opener strategy. Holton will start again Sunday afternoon.

The Orioles start Suárez, who has been up and down as of late. He allowed four earned runs in his last game against the Giants.

After Sunday's game, the Tigers will have an off day Monday before hosting the Rays.
