Detroit Tigers' Casey Mize reports elbow soreness, lands on 10-day injured list with sprain

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Detroit Tigers placed Casey Mize on the 10-day injured list with a right elbow sprain.

The 24-year-old reported elbow soreness after Thursday's start against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks in five innings.

"It was more when I woke up this morning," Mize said. "I'm going to leave it up to the doctors and trainers. I don't want to play the what-if game. I think that's a bad place to be in. We'll have more answers in the next couple days. I'm just trying to wait until then, honestly."

Mize, the 2018 No. 1 overall pick, underwent further examination Friday by the Royals' team doctor. The Tigers view the injured list designation as a precautionary move, but Mize will miss at least one start.

"I don't know how significant of an injury it is," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said, "other than we know it was going to be at a minimum a start, so that takes him onto the injured list. We'll go through the battery of tests and hope for the best. Maybe it's just a little bump in the road and he'll feel better in the coming days."

Mize has made two starts this season, posting a 5.40 ERA with two walks and four strikeouts in 10 innings. He has a 4.29 ERA in 188⅔ innings and 39 starts across his three-year MLB career, with an 18.7% strikeout rate.

"Really frustrating," Mize said. "I work really hard to try to avoid this. Unfortunately, it's the nature of our game. This happens. But it's definitely not fun when you can't contribute. I care about providing value and contributing. Over the next 10 days, it's not going to be fun."

To replace Mize on the roster, the Tigers recalled outfielder Daz Cameron from Triple-A Toledo.

Without Mize, the Tigers' starting rotation features left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, lefty Tarik Skubal, righty Matt Manning and lefty Tyler Alexander. Righty Michael Pineda, who signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract in March, is scheduled to make his third start for Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.

Pineda will join the Tigers soon.

"We'll see," Hinch said. "There's some conversation of maybe Pineda not pitching Sunday when he normally was in Triple-A. But this news came pretty fast. This is all pretty fresh, so we're going to have to put our heads together and see what we can do."
