Detroit Red Wings fans 'disappointed but OK' with Steve Yzerman's quiet NHL trade deadline
The NHL trade deadline 2024 has passed, and the Detroit Red Wings were not a major player in the mass player swap around the league.
General manager Steve Yzerman made one move, shipping out forward Klim Kostin to the San Jose Sharks for minor-league defenseman Radim Simek and New Jersey's 2024 seventh-round pick.
Outside of that deal, the Red Wings didn't make any last-minute additions to the roster. Detroit is currently tied for the first wild card in the Eastern Conference with Tampa Bay at 72 points, two points ahead of the New York Islanders.
Detroit will instead rely on its depth as currently constructed to try to push for their first playoff appearance since 2016. The Red Wings could also rely on their strong prospect pool in Grand Rapids for a potential addition.
Here's what Red Wings fans are saying about the uneventful deadline, mostly supporting the lack of moves in favor of keeping the core together while retaining picks and prospects, though there was some disappointment:
Disappointed #LGRW didn't do much, but very okay with it. Moving Kostin opens the door for Berggren and that's addition by subtraction imo. Hopefully the team can weather the storm the next two weeks and keep their Playoff spot.

Underwhelming trade deadline for the Red Wings.

I understand standing pat but it would have been nice to grab a player. Underwhelmed if you asked me 😶

Oh well...
Looks like we pretty much stood pat at this #NHLTradeDeadline2024 so I got my wish.
Pity Klim Kong was a fiasco for us but adding a D for #GoGRG who doesn't have to go through waivers means promoting a kid from there is less tricky.

#RedWings #NHLTradeDeadline
erasing kostin's salary and opening a spot on the roster seem greater priorities than mr. simek, who has not played more than 49 games in any of his five #NHL seasons, and played this year in @TheAHL. https://t.co/Jp5JHyL4n6— gregg krupa (@greggkrupa) March 8, 2024
So unless a buzzer beater comes in, it looks like Stevie will stay put. Can't say I'm surprised given some of the prices. Moving out Kostin to free a spot and money next season was smart, and several teams we play down the stretch got worse. On to Arizona!#LGRW

Red Wings fans are about to way overreact to today’s trade deadline.
Sit back and enjoy the ride. Trust the plan. There is so much talent coming.
Does one player really make that difference in this year’s outcome? No.

**raises hand** I have lost zero faith in the plan for this team as it is beyond this season.
I don't really know what folks were expecting, here.
To be mad they didn't waste several top prospects and top picks for a *likely* rental doesn't work for where this team is at. #LGRW https://t.co/ZAoeDSOhmP— Ryan (@rdryan33) March 8, 2024
After almost a decade of guessing which Red Wings would be traded ahead of the deadline, I figured more fans would be happy about seeing this season's group stick together.
A big addition would have been fun, but ultimately unnecessary. This team isn't a Cup contender yet.— Devin L. (@HockeyWithDevin) March 8, 2024
