Detroit Red Wings close road trip with 4-3 overtime win at Seattle in matinee

SEATTLE — Alex Lyon looked back in form as the Detroit Red Wings capped their trip with a victory.

It took an overtime goal from Ben Chiarot to settle Monday's matinee at 4-3 over the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena. It's the first time in six games against the 3-year-old expansion team that the Wings have won.

That gave them four points on the four-game trip, and improved their record to 29-20-6, strengthening their hold on a wild card in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Moritz Seider scored the first goal but Jared McCann tied it on a power play late in the first period. McCann scored again in the second period after Lucas Raymond's goal, but Daniel Sprong had the Wings in the lead going into the third period. That held up until a little past the 7-minute mark, when Jaden Schwartz sent a wrist shot behind Alex Lyon.

Lyon faced his 40th shot while helping kill a penalty to Olli Määttä that came with 1:44 to play in regulation. Chiarot scored 1:07 into overtime, with Dylan Larkin and Raymond picking up the assists.

The Wings next play Thursday against the Colorado Avalanche.

Slow start

James Reimer bailed out his teammates until they got their legs going in Calgary; Monday it was Lyon who made half a dozen early saves as the Kraken swarmed his zone. Kailer Yamamoto (who was part of the trade that brought Klim Kostin to Detroit from the Edmonton Oilers; the Wings turned around and bought out Yamamoto) took a cross-checking penalty on Shayne Gostsibehere at 6:14, at which point shots favored Seattle, 7-1. Unlike in Calgary, the Wings didn't get momentum off their man advantage, and the Kraken managed to test Lyon twice during the stretch.

Seven for Seider

Seider put the Wings in the lead when he fired a shot from the blue line at 13:30. It was Seider's seventh goal of the season, matching the career high he set in his Calder-Trophy winning season two years ago. With 27 games still on the slate, Seider certainly projects to top 10 goals. This is a big season for him, as he's due a sizable extension coming off his entry-level contract. Seider had a scare during the Kraken penalty kill when a shot was coming right at his head, but he managed to get out of the way.

Second surge

The Wings had a better second period after being outshot, 15-6, in the first, and were rewarded with another lead. Jeff Petry sent the puck in from the point, and J.T. Compher fired a shot that Joey Daccord turned away only for Raymond to connect on the rebound. McCann scored his second of the day when he battled in front of the net to make it 2-2 at 10:51. Sprong, who spent one full season and parts of another with the Kraken, made it 3-2 at 15:58 when he finished a setup by Christian Fischer.
