Detroit Pistons' Simone Fontecchio undergoes toe surgery, full recovery expected by camp

Simone Fontecchio underwent surgery on his left big toe and is expected to recover before training camp opens this fall, the Detroit Pistons announced on Tuesday.

Fontecchio, 28, arrived in Detroit at February's trade deadline and immediately became one of the team's top contributors. He averaged 15.4 points through 16 games and nine starts, shooting 47.9% overall and 42.6% from 3. His toe injury cost him the final 15 games of the season, however.

Prior to arriving in Detroit, Fontecchio played 102 games with the Utah Jazz from 2022-2024 and made 40 starts. His ability to play on the wing and give the Pistons some much-needed shooting provided an immediate boost, even though it didn't always show up in the win column.

The 6-foot-8 Italian forward is expected to be a priority for the Pistons this offseason as he approaches restricted free agency.

A new leader will be in place by then, as the team is expected to officially hire Trajan Langdon as its new head of basketball operations this week.
