Detroit Lions waive Jason Cabinda to make room for Michael Badgley

Jason Cabinda's time on the Detroit Lions' active roster did not last long as the team continued to shuffle the roster before Saturday's matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

The longtime fullback was waived by the team Friday, just one day after he was activated from injured reserve. The team also announced the signing of kicker Michael Badgley from the practice squad, as well as the release of DL Chris Smith from the practice squad and the signing of OL Michael Schofield in his place.

The Lions have one open roster spot remaining after the moves over the past two days. The Lions created the open spot by waiving two players, cornerback Chase Lucas and linebacker Trevor Nowaske, then bringing Badgley to the active roster.

Badgley has handled kicking duties the past two games after the team cut Riley Patterson on Dec. 19 to clear room for rookie Hendon Hooker as the third-string quarterback. Through two games, Badgley is 1-for-1 on field goals and 9-for-10 on extra points, with the only miss coming on a block caused by a failure in the protection unit.

Schofield, a Michigan alumnus, has not played in a game in the 2023 season. Most recently, Schofield appeared in 10 games (starting five) for the Chicago Bears in 2022.

Cabinda, an undrafted free agent out of Penn State, joined the Lions in 2019 after a season with the then-Oakland Raiders. He has appeared in 45 games for Detroit, with six carries for 27 yards.

These moves came as two Detroit defenders prepare a return from injured reserve. Defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who has been ruled out Saturday, is nearing his return from a torn pectoral in Week 2. The Lions also opened James Houston's practice window on Thursday to gear up for his return from a fractured fibula in Week 2.

Along with Gardner-Johnson and Houston, the Lions ruled out tight end Brock Wright (hip) and listed top cornerback Cam Sutton (toe) as questionable for Saturday.
