Detroit Lions thumped by Chicago Bears, 28-13, in jarring performance
CHICAGO — The Detroit Lions found themselves in a familiar position Sunday: Down 12 points in the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bears.
But this time, there would be no comeback.
Justin Fields hit DJ Moore for the go-ahead touchdown on a free play on fourth down late in the third quarter, then ran for an insurance score on third-and-goal from the 11 early in the fourth as the Bears handed the Lions their second loss in three games, 28-13, at Soldier Field.
The Lions, who rallied from 12 down with three minutes to play to beat the Bears at Ford Field in Week 11, still lead the NFC North with a 9-4 record but failed to keep pace with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers for the top two playoff seeds in the NFC.
The Lions, on a cold and blustery day with temperatures hovering in the mid-30s, couldn’t get their offense on track and repeatedly hurt themselves with mistakes.

Jahmyr Gibbs dropped a would-be touchdown in the first quarter.
Fields escaped pressure to convert a third down on the Bears’ first touchdown drive.
And with the game on the line in the second half, Aidan Hutchinson jumped offsides to give Fields a free shot downfield that ended with a touchdown pass to Moore.
The Lions went three-and-out on their first three possessions of the second half, and with the game tied at 13, Chicago started its go-ahead drive at midfield with 4:06 left in the third quarter.
The Bears failed to convert a third-and-13 from the 38 when Fields threw incomplete as he was being wrestled to the ground by Julian Okwara. Officials did not throw a penalty for intentional grounding on the play, and the Bears lined up for another offensive play on fourth-and-13.
Hutchinson jumped offside with about 9 seconds on the play clock. Fields took a hurried snap from center Lucas Patrick, and threw down the left sideline as Moore ran past Jerry Jacobs with no safety help over top for an easy touchdown.
Romeo Okwara blocked the ensuring extra point to keep the Lions within six, but Goff and Graham Glasgow fumbled a quarterback-center exchange two plays later, and the Bears recovered at the Detroit 29-yard line.
Fields picked up one first down with his arm, then scrambled for an 11-yard touchdown when Hutchinson looped inside on a stunt with Levi Onwuzurike leaving the edge unoccupied.
The Bears (5-8) missed the two-point conversion attempt, but got a 28-yard field goal on their next possession after stopping Gibbs for a 4-yard loss on fourth-and-1 from the Lions 34.
Fields completed 19 of 33 passes for 223 yards and added 58 yards rushing on 12 carries, his first game with less than 100 yards rushing against the Lions since 2021. Fields had run for 383 yards in his previous three games against the Lions.

Goff was 20 of 35 passing for 161 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions – both on fourth-and-longs. He threw three interceptions against the Bears in November, when the Lions won despite four turnovers.
Moore opened the scoring with a 16-yard run on a direct snap for the Bears, and the Lions scored all 13 of their points in the second quarter, on a 12-yard touchdown run by Gibbs and an 8-yard touchdown catch by Josh Reynolds.
The Lions host the Denver Broncos on Saturday night, with a second try at their first 10-win season since 2014.
