Detroit Lions stock WRs, D-line with Tom Kennedy, Kyle Peko from practice squad

Tom Kennedy is getting first crack at the No. 5 receiver job, and the Detroit Lions have added two defensive linemen to their gameday roster with D.J. Reader still making his way back from injury.

The Lions signed second-year defensive lineman Chris Smith to the open spot on their 53-man roster Saturday and elevated Kennedy and defensive tackle Kyle Peko from the practice squad.

Reader returned to practice last week after spending all of training camp on the physically unable to perform list while rehabbing from the torn quad tendon he suffered last year with the Cincinnati Bengals.

PRESIDENT KENNEDY: No hype, just hard work for Tom Kennedy, Detroit Lions’ consistent preseason WR king

Lions coach Dan Campbell said the team was targeting a Week 2 return for Reader, but left open the possibility he could play in Sunday’s season opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

Peko took most of the first-team reps at nose tackle with Reader out in training camp.

The Lions only kept four receivers on their 53-man roster, but have four more veterans on practice squad.

Kennedy, who has been with the Lions since 2019, primarily on practice squad, has been in the offense the longest. He has 14 career catches for 195 yards, but none since 2022.
