Dan Campbell confirmed the Detroit Lions lost two members of the trenches for a "long time" during Tuesday's practice.

Defensive lineman John Cominsky will be "down for a long time" after he was carted off the practice field with a right knee injury in team drills. Offensive guard Netane Muti was the other player Campbell said sustained an injury that will knock him out for a long time after he exited Wednesday with an upper-body injury.

"We lost Commish," Campbell said. "He's gonna be down for a long time here. And Muti as well, a guard. So both of them have injuries that are going to knock them out for a while and both will need surgeries and I hate that for both players. Both of them were having good camps."

Cominsky is entering the final year of the two-year contract he signed with the Lions following his first season with the team in 2022. He made 11 starts on the defensive line as a rotational member in 2023, finishing with two sacks and 36 total tackles in 16 regular season games.

"He's been a part of us going on three years now man," Campbell said. "He's just a steady piece that does things right, works his tail off so I hate it. But I also know he's gonna get it done and he'll do everything he can to get back and be ready."

NFL Network and ESPN reported Wednesday night that Cominsky suffered a torn ACL that will sideline him for months. Campbell did not give a specific designation outside of the time, but did say he and general manager Brad Holmes are hopeful about a potential late-season return.

"We're optimistic," Campbell said. "Look, if anybody can do it, if anybody can come back and be ready to go late in the season, we know Cominsky will do everything he can to get back so that's tentatively kind of what we're thinking."

Muti is a reserve offensive lineman who joined the team as a free-agent after playing with the Raiders briefly in 2023. He played at both guard and center with the other reserve offensive players during training camp.

Campbell said the training camp period has been about finding out what players can do in case of situations like this and he has liked what he's seen from the depth that's expected to fill Cominsky's role.

"The good news is we have pretty quality depth and starters in that (d-line) room that are continuing to get better," he said.
