Detroit Lions' Gardner-Johnson trolls Baker Mayfield, tosses him ball after interception
C.J. Gardner-Johnson is back in the secondary for the Detroit Lions and is already delivering his patented big plays – and antics.
On the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' first possession of the divisional round game in Detroit, Gardner-Johnson pulled down an interception off a tipped pass from Baker Mayfield. Mayfield tried to fit a pass over the middle to Mike Evans on third-and-17, but the All-Pro receiver couldn't come down with the high pass and tipped it straight into the air. Gardner-Johnson camped under the ball like a pop-up and made the easy catch for the turnover.
He returned the interception to the Tampa Bay 41-yard line before he was pushed out of bounds on the Tampa sideline. After he was stopped, Gardner-Johnson, never afraid of getting under the opposing team's skin, flipped the ball back to Mayfield, who was returning to his bench, instead of the referee.

The beef between the two players started well before the game, with Gardner-Johnson antagonizing Mayfield, perhaps not on purpose, while saying the Bucs had a talented receiving core but needed a better quarterback. Gardner-Johnson made the comments before their first-round win over the Los Angeles Rams. Mayfield took exception to the comment and responded by saying the loud Lions safety needed to spend more time watching game film.
So far on the field, Gardner-Johnson has the advantage in the personal feud within the playoff game. The interception led to a field goal by the Lions to take an early 3-0 lead. The Buccaneers responded with a quick field goal drive to make it 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.
