Detroit Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs headed to NFL Pro Bowl games

One of the biggest snubs for the Pro Bowl is headed to the games after all.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown was named to the 2024 NFL Pro Bowl on Tuesday as an injury replacement for Philadelphia Eagles receiver A.J. Brown.

St. Brown tied for second in the NFL with 119 catches this season and set career-highs with 1,515 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was picked first alternate for the game on the original ballot, behind Brown, CeeDee Lamb, Puka Nacua and Mike Evans, and said he was irked by not being selected to the team.

"It is what it is, but I don’t know how many 1,500-yard receivers with 10 touchdowns didn’t make the Pro Bowl, but I guess I got to try to look that up and see," St. Brown said after the Lions' Week 18 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Hall of Fame receiver Isaac Bruce in 1995 is the only other receiver to be passed over for the Pro Bowl in a 1,500-yard, 10-touchdown season, according to the Associated Press.

Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs also was added to the Pro Bowl roster Tuesday as a replacement for San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey, who had 132 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns in the 49ers' NFC championship game win over the Lions on Sunday, is ineligible for the Pro Bowl with the 49ers headed to Super Bowl LVIII.

Gibbs, originally a first alternate for the game, had 945 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns in the regular season. He's the first Lions rookie running back to go to the Pro Bowl since Barry Sanders in 1989, and joins teammate Sam LaPorta as rookies on the roster this year.

The Lions now have six players slated to take part in this week's games: St. Brown, Gibbs, LaPorta, right tackle Penei Sewell, center Frank Ragnow and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who was selected as the NFC special teams player, is not playing after he left the 49ers game with a groin injury.

The Lions last sent seven players to the Pro Bowl in the 1964 season.
