Deshaun Watson back to practice for Cleveland Browns in advance of game against Cardinals

BEREA — Deshaun Watson is once again going to try to get ready to play a game for the Browns.

The quarterback returned to practice Wednesday, his first practice since Oct. 20. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said before practice Watson would be limited during the workout, although he wouldn't expand on what that meant in terms of work.

Stefanski also declined to say anything about Watson's status for Sunday's home game against the Arizona Cardinals. He did say P.J. Walker would be the backup to Watson this week.

"I always try to keep it day to day," Stefanski said. "We'll focus on today. He'll be out there and we'll see how he does."

Neither Watson nor any other Browns quarterback spoke Wednesday, typically the day Watson has talked to the media.

The Browns did nothing at Tuesday's trade deadline to address the quarterback — or any other — position, although there were reports they offered a sixth-round pick to the Washington Commanders to bring back Jacoby Brissett. Brissett started the 11 games for which Watson was suspended last season, then signed with Washington as a free agent in March.

"I like our roster," Stefanski said when asked about not adding a veteran backup. "I like the guys we have."

Watson was not wearing a sleeve on his right arm, but it was unclear whether or not he was wearing any kind of harness on the shoulder during the period of practice open to the media. He went through a typical warmup and then fully participated in the individual portion, all of which was held inside the Browns field house.

During the individual drills, most of Watson's passes were of the short-to-intermediate variety. There was a noticeable zip on a number of the throws, including on a deep out route to Elijah Moore.

With a number of players battling through injuries, Stefanski said the overall practice structure Wednesday was adjusted. After an individual period and a 7-on-7 at full speed, he said they planned to "slow it down" to a "jog-through" for the team period.

Watson has played 12 plays since Sept. 24, when he sustained an injury to the rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder in the third quarter of a Browns win over the Tennessee Titans. All of them came when he started an Oct. 22 win at the Indianapolis Colts but left with 3:13 remaining in the first quarter.

During that brief return to the field, Watson completed just 1 of 5 passes for 5 yards. He threw an interception and had a second interception — which happened on the same play after which he departed — overturned by review.

Watson practiced the Thursday and Friday before the Colts game, the only two practices he had participated in between the Oct. 1 game against the Baltimore Ravens — the first game he missed due to the injury — and Wednesday. The Browns felt confident in Watson's ability to play in Indianapolis, right up until Dayo Odeyingbo shoved him to the ground on his 12th snap.

The independent neurologist on the Browns sideline checked Watson for a concussion, but cleared him. Stefanski, though, elected to stick with Walker for the remainder of the game, saying the decision was to "protect" Watson.

"Yeah, I think every week's different when you're working through an injury," Stefanski said Wednesday, "every week is different and how you feel day to day. So this week's just completely different in my perspective."

The win over the Colts was the second of three games Walker filled in for Watson, but the only one he didn't start. He started both the Oct. 15 win over the San Francisco 49ers and last Sunday's loss at the Seattle Seahawks.

The loss to Seattle was the first for the Browns in a game Walker started, with his interception with 1:57 remaining opening the door for the Seahawks' go-ahead touchdown drive. He had led fourth-quarter comebacks in wins over the 49ers and Colts.

Walker has completed 48 of 97 passes (49.5%) for 618 yards with a touchdown and five interceptions. He's turned the ball over six times total, including three times in the loss to the Seahawks.
