Derrick Henry to sign with Ravens, ending dominant 8-year run with Tennessee Titans
Derrick Henry's royal reign as the star and face of the Tennessee Titans is over.
Four-time Pro Bowl and two-time All Pro running back Derrick Henry will reportedly sign with the Baltimore Ravens on a two-year deal, per a post on his social media account, ending his dominant eight-year tenure with the Titans. Henry is the Titans' all-time leader in touchdowns scored with 93 and is second in franchise history with 9,502 rushing yards. He won the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year award in 2020 when he ran for 2,027 yards and 17 touchdowns and helped lead the Titans to playoff berths in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021.
Derrick Henry's history with the Titans
The Titans selected Henry, the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner, out of Alabama with the 45th pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He didn't emerge as a full-time starter until his third pro season but from that point asserted himself as the NFL's most punishing, physical and productive ball carrier. He led the league in carries three times, most recently in 2022, and led the NFL in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in 2019 and 2020.
After missing half the 2021 season with a foot injury, Henry returned in 2022 and played a lot like his old self. He rushed for 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns though the rest of the Titans offense regressed and the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018. The team struggles continued in 2023, with the Titans finishing 6-11, but Henry still rushed for 1,167 yards to lead the AFC and scored double-digit touchdowns for the sixth-straight year.
Since arriving in the NFL, Henry has 598 more rushing yards and 19 more rushing touchdowns than any other player. He's also the active leader in career postseason rushing yards with 732 and ranks sixth in NFL history with an average of 104.6 rushing yards per playoff game. In the three playoff games the Titans won with Henry on roster, he rushed for 156, 182 and 195 yards, accounting for two rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown.

The Titans without Derrick Henry
Without Henry, the Titans' running back room takes a different shape. The Titans drafted Tyjae Spears in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and used him as a passing-downs back capable of making moves in space. After Jonathan Ward, Julius Chestnut and Hassan Haskins all sustained injuries in the preseason or early in the regular season, the Titans tended to only carried two running backs on their active roster in 2023.
Henry isn't the first franchise icon the Titans have parted ways with in the last 12 months. The team traded two-time All Pro safety Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 23 for two Day 3 draft picks and veteran safety Terrell Edmunds. The Titans also fired coach Mike Vrabel in January and are expected to lose veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill to free agency this offseason as well.
First-year coach Brian Callahan, who took over for Vrabel earlier this year, now builds his offense around second-year quarterback Will Levis, Spears, veteran receiver DeAndre Hopkins and offensive lineman Peter Skoronski.
