Denzel Ward, Grant Delpit sidelined, Maurice Hurst II, Mohamoud Diabate back for Browns

BEREA — The Browns secondary started the work week heading into Sunday's game at the Philadelphia Eagles looking like a M*A*S*H unit.

Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward (hamstring) and safeties Grant Delpit (concussion) and Ronnie Hickman (ankle) all did not practice Wednesday as they deal with various injuries sustained in last Sunday's 34-13 loss at the Washington Commanders. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, though, was not ready to rule any of them out against the Eagles.

The three were among seven Browns players on the pre-practice injury report, along with running back D'Onta Foreman (ankle), offensive tackle James Hudson III (shoulder), long snapper Charley Hughlett (ribs) and center Ethan Pocic (knee). Hughlett, who had played in 152 consecutive games, was placed on injured reserve by the team shortly before they went on the practice field Wednesday afternoon.

Bay Village native Rex Sunahara was signed to the active roster to take Hughlett's spot. Sunahara handled the long-snapping for the Browns in the preseason while Hughlett was dealing with injuries.

Three names not on the pre-practice injury report who did not practice were defensive end Myles Garrett, tight end David Njoku and wide receiver Amari Cooper. Garrett and Njoku, who have been battling injuries for weeks now, were not on the field, while Cooper was on the field but not practicing.

Tight end Geoff Swaim was signed to the active roster from the practice squad to provides the Browns with some insurance if Njoku ultimately can't play against Philadelphia. The veteran had been a gameday elevation from the practice squad the last three games.

The Browns did have some good news in that defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II (ankle) and linebacker Mohamoud Diabate (hip) were designated for return to practice off of injured reserve, which opens a 21-day window for them to potentially be activated. Those two were among four players who were placed on injured reserve on Sept. 11 due to injuries suffered in the season opener, along with safety Juan Thornhill (calf) and linebacker Tony Fields II (ankle).

The Browns signed safety Trey Dean and defensive end Marcus Haynes to the practice squad.
