DeMarcus Cousins assessed technical foul, ejected from the bench at Madison Square Garden

DeMarcus Cousins was in street clothes on Friday night at Madison Square Garden for the Golden State Warriors’ matchup against the New York Knicks.

That fact, though, didn’t stop him from earning a technical foul and getting thrown out of the game.

After a Golden State timeout late in the first quarter, Cousins — who is recovering from an Achilles injury last season and has still not made his debut this year with the Warriors — got into an argument with referee Scott Foster.

Finally, Foster had enough. He assessed Cousins a technical foul and threw him out of the game.

Foster said after the game that both Cousins and Knicks center Enes Kanter were warned about talking to the bench before he was ejected. According to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears, Cousins and Kanter were “talking trash” before the game.

“Cousins took exception to the [warning] and during the timeout he was ejected for one technical foul for unsportsmanlike conduct,” Foster said after the game.

Foster clarified that they only assessed one technical foul because Cousins was not active in the game, and that it was “more so the way of which he stated what he stated” that got him ejected.

The ejection marks just the third time in the last 15 seasons that a player was ejected without actually playing in the game.

While there is still no timetable for the 28-year-old’s return, Cousins did practice with the Warriors for the first time this week.
