Deion Sanders, increased competition have Texas Tech coaches amped for Big 12's latest realignment

There's been no escaping conference realignment chaos over the past few weeks. That includes the coaches for Texas Tech teams getting ready for the 2023 season.

On Tuesday, Tom Stone began his 17th year as the head coach of the Texas Tech soccer team. Joey McGuire followed suit on Friday, embarking on his second year leading the Red Raiders on the football field.

In that time, the Big 12 Conference has added three more schools to the fold starting in 2024. The University of Colorado made its intentions known a few weeks ago while the University of Arizona, University of Utah and Arizona State University joined CU — and future Big Ten programs Oregon and Washington — in leaving the Pac-12 on Friday night.

Prime Time additon: What Colorado's return to the Big 12 means for Texas Tech

When the Avalanche-Journal polled Tech football players at local media day Thursday, the majority said they couldn't care less who is in or out of the Big 12. They'll play whoever is on the schedule.

McGuire, Stone and Tony Graystone, head coach of the Tech volleyball team, have different viewpoints of the madness.

What Joey McGuire thinks of the Big 12's latest realignment efforts

While most of McGuire's players said they didn't care much about the additions of Colorado and Arizona — mainly because most of them won't be in college by July — there was one exception.

Rayshad Williams, the senior defensive back, said he loves the idea of the Buffaloes joining the Big 12 because of their head coach. Williams said he goes home and watches football on YouTube. That inevitably leads Williams to highlights of Deion Sanders.

McGuire admits that he has a different perspective on Sanders than many who see him in a negative light. He coached Sanders' oldest son in high school. There, he got to see Prime Time in a different light — a father, a supporter. But he sees Sanders' value to the Big 12 in other ways.

"I always tell everybody," McGuire said, "he's one of the best guys in the world marketing wise. I mean, there's Deion, and then there's a brand and the brand is Prime. I think it's great for the Big 12. I'm excited that he's coming in."

Tom Stone sees great value in Colorado, Arizona soccer additions

The jumping-off point for the Big 12's expansion efforts started in 2021 when Texas and Oklahoma announced they'd be leaving the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference.

Losing Texas, Stone admitted, is a tough blow.

"This is the best team Texas has ever had, the Texas we're seeing right now," Stone said Tuesday. "That's good for the conference, so losing them was not great for the soccer division."

Gaining perennial contenders like BYU and UCF, along with Houston and Cincinnati, Stone said, helps alleviate the loss of UT. Bringing Colorado and Arizona into the mix makes up the rest of the difference.

"We were certainly cheering for Colorado to come in," Stone said. "They're a really good team. They play a good brand. They're hard to beat. ... That's just a big addition. Big 12 soccer is getting ridiculously good. And if Arizona comes in this week, it's going to be better, because they're big-time too."

Tony Graystone not playing favorites in Big 12 volleyball additions

Practice for the Tech volleyball team won't begin until Tuesday, but in an interview with the A-J on Friday, Graystone said that he's been paying close attention to what's going on with the Big 12.

"It's pretty exciting," Graystone said. "It's cool. We're getting to build out the Big 12 in terms of region and different parts of the country that we're going to be playing new programs that we don't have a lot of history with."

Hours before the official announcement of Arizona, Arizona State and Utah was made, Graystone said he couldn't spotlight any of the teams in particular. They'll all add value to the conference.

"Everybody that we're talking about is established," Graystone said. "They've got good programs and they're just going to make us better."
