One of the best receivers in the NFL has no interest in playing on a one-year deal. Green Bay Packers star Davante Adams reportedly informed the team he will not play under the franchise tag in 2022, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Adams, 29, received the franchise tag after the team agreed to sign quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a reported massive extension. The Rodgers deal freed up salary-cap space, which allowed the Packers to retain Adams at roughly $18.4 million in 2022. Adams reportedly is more interested in getting a long-term deal from the team.

Adams stood to receive a massive contract on the open market. With the Packers taking that away from him, Adams will seek a long-term deal to remain in Green Bay.

The Packers don't have to honor Adams' wishes. The team can wait out Adams and see if he is serious about missing games. Given how much Adams means to the franchise, however, the Packers will likely try to work out a long-term deal.

The two sides are reportedly far apart on an extension and their relationship is in a rocky place, per Rapoport. It's possible that's true, and Adams is truly frustrated with the Packers. It also could be a negotiating ploy, a way for Adams to tell the Packers they need to increase their offer.

Packers trying to make salary-cap space for Davante Adams deal

It's hard to believe the Packers would trade Adams. After being selected in the second round of the 2014 draft, Adams developed into one of the best receivers in the NFL. Throughout much of his career, Adams has been the only dependable WR on the team. His on-field chemistry with Rodgers is unmatched.

The Packers still need to sort out their salary cap situation for 2022. The team entered Monday more than $40 million over the cap, per OverTheCap.com. That figure doesn't include Rodgers' reported extension.

The team took significant steps to lower that deficit Monday, reportedly releasing pass rusher Za'Darius Smith and offensive lineman Billy Turner. Smith came with a $27.6 million cap number, saving the team a fair amount of money.

Even with those cap issues, the Packers have shown a willingness to make sure their stars get paid. The team extended linebacker Preston Smith on Monday, and brought back linebacker De’Vondre Campbell on a five-year, $50 million deal.

After a flurry of moves Monday morning, the Packers lowered their cap number to $18 million over the cap. The Packers can still restructure some other contracts to move cap money around, but still need to free up a large portion of money to afford Adams.

With Rodgers reportedly locked in, Adams should be the team's biggest priority this offseason. With Monday's moves the team has already taken steps to make sure Adams gets signed.
