Dana White addresses possible Conor McGregor-Georges St-Pierre super fight and interest in promoting boxing matches
The MMA world is still buzzing with Georges St-Pierre’s victory over Michael Bisping at UFC 217 to claim the middleweight title after a four year absence. But the question now is what will GSP do for an encore.
With plenty of options on the table, the one that has garnered the most attention is a potential showdown with the current superstar of MMA, Conor McGregor. However, the fact that McGregor is the lightweight champion (155 pounds) and St-Pierre is the middleweight champion (185 pounds) means that there is a pretty significant size difference between the two. Dana White addressed the potential super fight with TMZ Sports after someone off camera inquired.
“Conor and (GSP) won’t…” White started before taking a brief pause. “Listen, I’ll never say never but [GSP] weighs 185 and Conor weighs 155.”
Knowing what he dealt with when watching what appeared to be a pipe dream come to fruition with Conor McGregor’s mega fight with Floyd Mayweather, the UFC president is keenly aware that the Irishman will never back down from a challenge.
“Conor will take any fight,” he said. But White made it clear that the target for St-Pierre is current interim champion Robert Whitaker while McGregor’s first fight back will likely be against interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson.
In the meantime, White has been bitten by the boxing bug and expressed interest in becoming a boxing promoter. According to the Los Angeles Times, he’s working on getting a promoter’s license and made it clear that he is “getting into boxing, 100 percent.”
He won’t be leaving his post as UFC president, but he’s looking to partner with WME-IMG to get the ball rolling.
“I’m getting into boxing with [WME/IMG head] Ari [Emanuel], and the UFC will be doing boxing too,” White said. “It’s still early. We’re still working on it. I’ve got to get my [stuff] together, but I’m getting into boxing, man. It’s coming.”
