Dan Lanning on Oregon football's first fall scrimmage: 'Plenty to work on'

The Oregon football team held its first scrimmage of the month on Saturday behind closed doors in the lead up to its 2024 season opener against Idaho on Aug. 31.

"Good competitive scrimmage, good physicality," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "Guys out there tackling, running to the ball, blocking hard, thought all that showed up. There are a lot of operational things that we can clean up and improve, whether it's pre-snap penalties, shift motions, handling those the proper way, and plenty to work on, but we saw a slight improvement on where we want to be."

Roughly a week and a half into camp, Lanning said he was pleased with his team's competitive toughness. But he said he saw plenty to clean up from both offense and defense, with neither side necessarily getting the better of the other for the majority of the scrimmage.

Lanning was happy with the way his offense operated on third downs, but said the defense did a good job of limiting explosive plays.

There was only one turnover during the scrimmage, per Lanning. He also said his offense didn't move at the pace he wants it to come Aug. 31.

"It wasn't there today," Lanning said of the offensive pace. "I'd like to see us — again, when I talk about the operation, that's kind of I'm talking about. I want to see the pace of play or getting in and out of the huddle, I want to see that improve.

"I certainly have a vision. I don't know if we're there yet. But we have talent, we have some ability, we got to improve."
