Dan Campbell takes blame for Detroit Lions mix-up vs. Bucs: 'Totally screwed my team'

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell took the blame for his team's end-of-half embarrassment Sunday vs. the Tampa Bay Bucs at Ford Field in Week 2 of the NFL season. The play ended up being a key factor in the Lions' 20-16 loss.

The Lions cost themselves three points, when the field goal unit ran onto the field as Jared Goff and the offense spiked the ball on third down with a few seconds left at the Buccaneers 9-yard line. The Lions were penalized with too many men on the field, and the clock expired on a 10-second runoff.

"Half the team ran onto the field," Fox analyst Daryl Johnston said on the broadcast.

The Lions went into halftime trailing the Buccaneers, 13-6, with rising kicker Jake Bates providing the offense with two field goals. They would have had a chance for a 26-yard field goal for Bates.

Campbell was visibly frustrated on the sideline after the miscommunication, and was interviewed upon coming out for the second half by Fox sideline reporter Laura Okmin.

"Listen, 100% on the head coach here," Campbell started when asked what happened. "Totally screwed my team. That is mine, we're going for the clock, clock it, it's not a 'Hurricane' (call). I made a decision I shouldn't have made, and our team's gonna have to overcome it. That's the bottom line."

The Lions opened the second half by driving deep into Bucs territory again, only to settle for Bates' third field goal.

The Lions took their first lead 16-13 lead late in third quarter on David Montgomery's 1-yard touchdown run, but Baker Mayfield quickly answered with an 11-yard run to put the Bucs ahead 20-16 with 34 seconds left in the third quarter.
