Dan Campbell gives Lions injury updates on Terrion Arnold, Alex Anzalone, Ifeatu Melifonwu

Detroit Lions rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold returned to practice Friday and is "trending the right way" to play in Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals after missing two days with an illness, coach Dan Campbell said.

"Today'll be a big day for him," Campbell said. "He was out there in walk-through. He's feeling much better and so today'll be important for him running around in practice, see what it looks like."

Arnold, the 24th pick of April's draft, has started each of the first two games in the Lions' new-look secondary and will factor heavily into Sunday's gameplan against talented rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn said Thursday.

Arnold has allowed 10 completions on 12 targets through two games, according to Pro Football Reference, and has been flagged twice in each game for drive-extending penalties. Arnold drew two pass interference calls that led to scores in the Lions' Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams, and was penalized for pass interference and facemasking in last week's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Glenn called Arnold and veteran Carlton Davis his "1-A and 1-AA" cornerbacks.

Officially, Arnold is questionable for Sunday.

Campbell offered injury updates on three more Lions before practice Friday:

LB Alex Anzalone injury update

Anzalone is in the final stages of concussion protocol after leaving the Buccaneers game with a brain injury. He still must be cleared by an independent neurologist before he's allowed to return for games.

He practiced on a limited basis and is questionable for Sunday.

"Alex is really the same thing," Campbell said. "He's going through the protocol and he was out there, he ran around a little bit and we'll see where he's at today. And there again it's hard to say. You just never know with the concussion protocol."

LG Graham Glasgow injury update

Glasgow is on track to play Sunday after missing Wednesday's practice with a knee injury. Glasgow practiced on a limited basis Thursday and Friday and is questionable for Sunday.

"He’s good," Campbell said. "He’s doing well. We took care of him on Wednesday, but he came back yesterday, practiced, no issues and so he should be good."

S Ifeatu Melifonwu injury update

S Ifeatu Melifonwu signs autographs after the Detroit Lions training camp at their training facility in Allen Park, Mich. on Monday, July 29, 2024.

Melifonwu is not currently a candidate for injured reserve, though Campbell said he and general manager Brad Holmes discussed the possibility.

Melifonwu has missed two games with an Achilles/ankle injury that has lingered since training camp. Melifonwu told the Free Press on Thursday he was "feeling better."

"It’s tough," he said. "I can’t really give an exact date (when I'll be back), but I’m getting better."

Said Campbell on Friday, "He’s progressing, he really is. He’s progressing. I would say no (he's not currently a candidate for IR). Now, that can change depending on if something happens here with everything else, the rest of the roster. But, right now, I don’t feel that way and he is getting better."

Melifonwu is one of two players ruled out for Sunday, along with rookie cornerback Ennis Rakestraw, who pulled his hamstring in pregame warmups against the Buccaneers and did not practice all week.
