Cowboys, Dak Prescott eyeing preseason return after shoulder strain
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott may get to see the field this preseason after all.
Prescott underwent an MRI on his shoulder on Saturday, and is reportedly “healing well,” according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. The hope, per multiple reports, is that Prescott can return to practice at least in some form this week and then play in the final preseason game against the Houston Texans on Aug. 21.
Prescott first strained his shoulder in July, and missed both the Hall of Fame Game and Friday’s preseason game against Arizona because of it. Both Prescott and McCarthy have been downplaying the injury from the beginning, and insisting that they’re just taking it slow.
Prescott threw a bit before Friday’s preseason game, his third throwing session back, and said Wednesday that he was recovering just fine.
“I’ve got to keep progressing the right way,” he said after practice on Wednesday, via ESPN. “As long as I don’t have any setbacks, when we get to that crossroads we’ll obviously talk to the doctors and coaches and figure out what’s best [for my return].”
While he’s yet to compete this preseason, or at all officially since the gruesome leg injury he suffered early last season, Prescott insists he’ll be ready to go by the time the Cowboys kick off the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers — where they've opened as +7 underdogs on BetMGM.
"I think that's because people that know me, the people who know the competitor I am, and I'm going to do whatever it takes to make sure I'm out there," he said Wednesday, via ESPN. "But as I've said, this is something we want to nip in the bud and not let continue to linger. And I think the best way we do that is stay on the pace that I am and progress through it the right way, and once Sept. 9 comes I'll play that game and move forward without ever thinking about this again."
Cowboys DT Neville Gallimore out 6-8 weeks
Though the Prescott news is promising, the Cowboys appear to have lost a key part to their defensive line.
Cowboys defensive tackle Neville Gallimore will miss 6-8 weeks after suffering a dislocated left elbow in their preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Friday, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.
Gallimore had an MRI on Saturday, but will not need surgery.
The Cowboys took Gallimore in the third round of last year’s draft. The 24-year-old started nine games last season and recorded 28 total tackles. He was expected to be part of their starting defensive line this season.
