Cubs' Ben Zobrist on leave from team due to divorce from wife of 14 years, per report
Ben Zobrist, the Chicago Cubs’ veteran utility man, has been on a personal leave of absence from the team since May 8, and no one — not even the Cubs — knows when he’ll be back.
According to ESPN, Zobrist is on leave from the team due to his divorce from wife Julianna Zobrist. Court documents from Cook County, Tenn. show that Zobrist filed for legal separation, saying that his wife "has been guilty of inappropriate marital conduct which render further cohabitation impossible."
The Cook County Register reported that Julianna filed for divorce on the same day that her husband filed for legal separation. She didn’t give a reason for the divorce in her filing and has reportedly hired attorney Karen Krehbiel, who represented a billionaire hedge fund CEO in his 2014 divorce.
The Zobrists have been married since 2005 and have three children. Julianna has performed the national anthem and “God Bless America” at Cubs games several times.
The Cubs haven’t released the reason for Zobrist’s absence, or how long he’ll be away. Manager Joe Maddon told ESPN that Zobrist had given “no indication” about how long he’ll be gone. However, Maddon is trying to support Zobrist while he’s away.
"I texted with him the other day and reminded him how much I care about him, how much we miss him."
