‘I was counting the days down’: Colts DT Grover Stewart is back from his PED suspension
INDIANAPOLIS — Grover Stewart had trouble sleeping Sunday night.
He knew he was finally back.
Nearly two months after he was handed a six-game suspension by the NFL, Stewart is finally eligible to play again.
“I was counting the days down,” Stewart said. “It couldn’t come soon enough.”
The big Colts nose tackle was available to speak for the first time since his suspension on Wednesday.
He didn’t offer any new details into the events leading up to his suspension. Stewart confirmed what he’d hinted in his initial statement, reiterating that he didn’t know he’d taken a banned substance and saying he was surprised when the news of the failed test was broken to him.
But he declined to go into details on the substance that triggered his positive test, or on how he ended up taking it.
“I’m past that now,” Stewart said. “I’m moving forward.”
The 30-year-old nose tackle also didn’t speculate on the possibility that his suspension could affect his impending free agency. Stewart is in the final year of his contract, although the way the Colts run defense has played in his absence proves how important he’s been to the defense.
Indianapolis is giving up 4.7 yards per carry and 153 yards per game in six games without Stewart; the Colts were giving up 3.7 yards per carry and 113.5 yards per game in six games with him.
“It’s like, here you are, in this point of the season, and you picked up a highly-touted free agent,” defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. “It just doesn’t happen very often.”
That level of impact likely impacts Stewart’s free agency more than anything.
“We’ll see when we get there,” Stewart said.
What Stewart wanted to do was focus on the task at hand.
He will play against Cincinnati.
And because he’s been able to work with the team the past three weeks, Stewart does not have to face a limited workload against the Bengals.
He’s planning on playing as much as the Colts defensive staff will let him.
“All game,” Stewart said.
Despite the struggles the Colts have had against the run, the Indianapolis defensive line has been terrorizing teams with the pass rush, racking up 21 sacks over the team’s four-game winning streak.
Stewart’s been champing at the bit to get in on the action.
“It’s been hard for me, sitting at home, watching the guys go out there each and every week, fight and do their job,” Stewart said. “It was hard for me, watching, knowing I couldn’t be out there helping them.”
He’s back now.
