Could Cowboys draft Texas' Jonathon Brooks? One analyst says it 'makes too much sense'

Jonathon Brooks has already announced his decision to leave Texas for the 2024 NFL draft. However, could the running back be staying in Texas like his former teammate?

The Athletic's Dane Brugler's recent mock draft has the former Longhorn traveling three hours north to join the Cowboys after being drafted in the second round. In the article, Brugler says it simply "makes too much sense."

"With Tony Pollard a pending free agent, running back could be a need for Dallas. And even though Brooks tore his ACL in November, the Cowboys have never shied from taking risks, especially in the second round," Brugler said.

Brooks broke out in 2023, rushing for 1,139 yards and 10 touchdowns, earning him an appearance as a Doak Walker Award semifinalist. While he only played 10 games, his rushing yards ranked 28th nationally and 14th in the Texas record books.

Despite the injury, he's still the first back taken off the board in Brugler's draft. Dallas' need for a running back and their past willingness to take chances on hurt players makes Brooks a viable option. In addition, the doctor who performed the procedure on Brooks' knee is Dr. Dan Cooper, the Cowboys’ head physician.

Dallas will be the NFL team with the most knowledge on Brooks' recovery from his surgery. The running back's next stop is the East-West Shrine Bowl, where he will be interviewing with teams.
