Coronavirus: MLS following CDC's recommendation, extends postponement to May 10
Hours after the English Premier League extended its coronavirus-induced postponement through at least April 30, the top soccer league in the United States and Canada extended its own suspension.
MLS announced on Thursday that it would remain shuttered until May 10. That date is in line with the latest recommendation from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.
The statement reads as follows:
“In accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance to postpone events involving more than 50 people over the next eight weeks, Major League Soccer has extended the postponement of its matches during this period of time.”
It went on to say that the league is evaluating all options, including pushing back the end of the season and playing MLS Cup in December, as reported by Yahoo Sports on Wednesday.
“The league is also identifying other available dates,” the statement continued. “Throughout this process, MLS will continue to prioritize the safety of our fans, players, employees and partners and to coordinate with federal and local public health authorities as well as other sporting organizations.”
