Connor McDavid Scores New 'Game-Winning' Record

EDMONTON -- Winning isn't everything.

Whoever came up with that adage never played professional sports. To Connor McDavid and the rest of the Edmonton Oilers, winning is everything.

This year, more than ever.

Last year, they came within a sniff of the Stanley Cup. Ultimately, the team couldn't manufacture another lucky break to alter their fate.

Now they endure another grinding season for another opportunity to call Lord Stanley's Cup theirs.

Leading the way is the captain, who finally scored his first goal of the season.

It wasn't as pretty a goal as the one he scored in the Oilers' first game against the Nashville Predators last season, but it stands out for other reasons. Namely, it puts McDavid's name in the record books in a unique way.

Since the 2015-16 season, McDavid has had the most game-winning goals in the NHL, with 70. Behind him is a tie between Leon Draisaitl and Auston Matthews with 61. In fourth is Boston Bruins sniper David Pastrnak.

The most impressive part is the number of goals these players have scored. Since 2015-16, McDavid has scored the fifth most goals with 336. Pastrnak (342), Draisaitl (347), Matthews (369), and Alex Ovechkin (378) are ahead of him. So McDavid has the most game-winning goals despite not having the most total goals.

McDavid is a clutch player for the Oilers. Some nights he can put the team on his back and will them to a victory. And as we learned from the Amazon Series to McDavid, winning is everything.
