Commanders name Kliff Kingsbury, Joe Whitt Jr. top assistants to new coach Dan Quinn
The Washington Commanders have moved quickly to fill two key spots on new head coach Dan Quinn's staff.
The team announced Monday the hiring of former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury as offensive coordinator and former Dallas Cowboys passing game coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. as defensive coordinator.
Kingsbury, 44, rose to prominence in the college ranks as an offensive whiz, which helped him land the job in Arizona, where he teamed with quarterback and No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray for four seasons. Murray suffered a torn ligament in his knee in 2022 and Kingsbury was fired at the end of that 4-13 season.
In Washington, Kingsbury could have another highly drafted rookie QB to mentor in his first season. The Commanders have the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft and are expected to take a quarterback with the selection.
Whitt, 45, comes with slightly less fanfare. He spent his first season in the NFL as an assistant to Quinn in Atlanta in 2007, then rejoined him in Dallas in 2021 as secondary coach and passing game coordinator.
Under Quinn, the Cowboys defense has become one of the NFL's best at producing big plays with six touchdown returns in 2023. Dallas also ranked fifth in 2023 in scoring defense, allowing opponents just 18.5 points per game.
