Columbus Crew shut out by Red Bulls, fall behind 1-0 in MLS Cup first round: Replay

The Crew scored a club-record number of goals in the regular season, but were unable to score one in their MLS Cup playoff opener.

In the first game of a best-of-three series, the Crew fell to the New York Red Bulls 1-0 at Lower.com Field.

New York scored the only goal of the game off a corner kick less than 30 minutes into to first half. Midfielder Emil Forsberg took the corner and after the ball bounced off multiple players' heads, midfielder Felipe Carbello launched a one-touch shot past goalkeeper Patrick Schulte.

Overall, the Crew took five more shots than New York, 16 compared to 11, but none were unable to score.

Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel had eight saves, the most he's recorded since 2021.

For the first time this year, the Crew's front line was without Diego Rossi, who missed the game due to a back injury. Rossi was the club's second-leading scorer with 12 goals in the regular season.

The Crew were the only higher seed from the Eastern Conference to lose their first game, and has to defeat the Red Bulls on the road in game two to stay alive and force a game three.

Game two is scheduled for 4:40 p.m. Sunday.

Crew midfielder DeJuan Jones took a close-distance shot from the right side of goalkeeper Carlos Coronel and despite the goal being fairly open, Coronel snuck a hand out to save Jones' attempt from scoring.

The ball went out of bounds following Coronel's save, giving the Crew a corner kick but the Red Bulls quickly cleared the attempt out of their box.

The Crew failed to record a sellout against the New York Red Bulls for the first game of a best-of-three series in the MLS Cup first round.

With their second round of substitutions, the Crew made two more changes:

  • Midfielder DeJuan Jones replaces Max Arfsten

  • Midfielder Dylan Chambost replaces Steven Moreira

With Chambost replacing Moreira, a defender, Sean Zawadzki moved from center midfield to the backline.

Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel went down with an apparent injury, holding his right leg before New York's medical staff came out on the field to evaluate Coronel. After over a minute of medical attention, Coronel got up and remained in the game.

Right in front of the Red Bulls' goal, Cucho Hernandez was in position to take a shot attempt, but Hernandez's chance to score was stopped when Carlos Cornel slapped the ball out of New York's box.

New York found the back of the net when midfielder Felipe Carballo sent the ball past goalkeeper Patrick Schulte off a corner kick.

The corner kick Carballo scored off was the second of back-to-back attempts for the Red Bulls. The first attempt, midfielder John Talkin executed the kick but defender Yevhen Cheberko cleared the ball out of the box and past the Crew's goal line.

Midfielder Emil Forsberg took the second corner, and after the ball hit off multiple players' heads, Carballo- located the ball to score with a right-footed shot.

Crew striker Cucho Hernandez fought his way into the Red Bulls' box before launching a shot that would go far right of the goal. The shot was Hernandez's third of the game.

Without Diego Rossi on the gameday roster and Dylan Chambost starting the game on the bench, forward Alex Matan took the corner kick for Columbus. Matan sent a pass to midfielder Max Arfsten, but the Red Bulls kept Arfsten from getting the ball further than the top of their own box.
