Columbus Crew sign Canadian defender Mo Farsi from Crew 2
The Crew have signed midfielder Mo Farsi from Crew 2, the second player to be added to the MLS roster this season from their second team.
Farsi, a Canadian youth national team player, was signed to Crew 2 from Canadian Premier League club Cavalry FC for the inaugural season of the MLS Next Pro league. The 22-year-old has six assists in 13 games with Crew 2.
The Crew still have space on the roster to add a player during the current transfer window. Farsi will not occupy an international roster spot.
Farsi made his Crew debut on June 19 against Charlotte FC in stoppage time. He played another 22 minutes off the bench against Real Salt Lake on June 25.
Farsi, who can also play outside back, could no longer be called up to the Crew from Crew 2 after two appearances, per MLS Next Pro rules. If the Crew wanted Farsi to be a part of their roster, they would have to sign him exclusively to the first team.
The Crew signed 19-year-old forward Jacen Russell-Rowe after two appearances from Crew 2. Like Russell-Rowe, Farsi can still be loaned to Crew 2 for games an unlimited amount.
“Mohamed quickly distinguished himself as one of the top performers for Crew 2 in MLS NEXT Pro, and we have been impressed with his ability to contribute defensively and offensively,” Crew president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said. “Second teams are crucial to developing young talent, and we’re already seeing the fruits of Crew 2 with the signings of first Jacen and now Mohamed."
