Columbus Crew roster: A breakdown based on the MLS' roster profiles
MLS rosters froze on Sept. 13, restricting clubs from making any changes, unless there is a case of extreme hardship, until the end of the MLS Cup playoffs. Following the roster freeze, the league released what it calls each club's "roster profile." A roster profile details how a club is constructed.
Every MLS club has up to 20 players on the senior roster and 10 players on the supplemental roster. Supplemental players' salaries do not count toward the club's salary budget.
Within the senior and supplemental rosters, clubs can have three designed players, who can be paid above the maximum salary, and three U-22 initiative players.
The U-22 players, as the name implies, must be under 22 when they play their first MLS game for the team they originally signed with and can be paid the league minimum. U-22 players who are under the age of 20 are paid at least $150,00 and those who are between the ages of 21 to 25 get at least $200,000. Once a player turns 25, or his second U-22 contract runs out, he can no longer fill a U-22 slot.
MLS roster profiles state which players fill international slots, which players are signed to homegrown contracts, and which are paid with target allocation money. The year every player's contract runs out, and the amount of club options years are included in the roster profile details as well.
