Columbus Crew officially sign MLS free agent Derrick Jones Jr. through 2025
As expected since reports broke last week that the Crew were in talks with midfielder Derrick Jones Jr., the club has officially signed the MLS free agent. The 26-year old's contract is set to run through 2025 with a club option for 2026.
This news came hours after Columbus announced its first free agent signing of the offseason, goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen.
“Derrick is a versatile player and a true competitor,” said Crew president and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. “He adds significant experience and depth to our roster."
Jones has appeared in over 100 MLS games with four different clubs, most recently with Charlotte FC. While in Charlotte, Jones recorded one goal through 44 regular season matches. Jones also has some international experience, representing Team USA in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Though listed as a midfielder, the 6-foot-4 Jones has the ability to be slotted into both the center midfield and center back positions.
