Columbus Crew acquire Argentine defender Andres Herrera from River Plate via loan
The Crew have acquired defender Andres Herrera from Argentina Primera Division’s River Plate via a loan that will run through mid-summer 2025, ending before the conclusion of the 2025 season. Following that, Columbus will have the option to sign Hererra.
Herrera, 25, spent nearly two seasons with River Plate starting in 2022. He started his professional playing career in Argentina in 2018 with San Lorenzo de Almagr. Between the two clubs, Herrera has appeared in 151 matches and scored eight goals in the Primera Division league. Herrera helped River Plate win the league title in 2023.
"Andres is a talented player, recently helping one of South America’s most prestigious clubs lift multiple trophies," Crew general manager Issa Tall said in a statement. "He already has valuable experience at the club and international levels as he enters the prime of his career. His addition strengthens our roster as we head into this important stretch of the season."
In 2019, Herrera made his debut for Argentina's U-23 national team in the Pan American Games, before representing his country in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Herrera and Columbus' other recent addition, DeJuan Jones from the New England Revolution, are eligible to be added to the Crew's Leagues Cup roster as two of the team's three allowed roster moves. Neither has officially been added to the roster, but the club has until Thursday to make the changes necessary for both to be available on Friday against Sporting Kansas City.
