DETROIT ― Patrik Laine scored the 200th goal of his NHL career in his return to the Blue Jackets’ lineup, but it wasn’t enough to get them what they needed most.

Despite overcoming an early 2-0 deficit Saturday afternoon at Little Caesar’s Arena, the Jackets’ winless skid extended to four straight games with a 5-4 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

After starting the season 3-2-0, the Blue Jackets (4-7-3) have notched just one win in their past nine games, going 1-5-3 during the span while continuing to struggle with possession against more experienced opponents like the Red Wings (8-5-2).

“Our starts haven’t been great, as of late,” defenseman Zach Werenski said. “Today, we don’t really start on time. They score two quick ones. Find a way to get the lead and then we’ve just got to find a way to play better when we have those leads. We know teams are going to push when they’re down, and we let them push for too long and they get a lead.”

Robby Fabbri led the Red Wings with two goals. Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat and Daniel Sprong scored the other three, all consecutively after the Blue Jackets took a 3-2 lead early in the second on a goal by Sean Kuraly.

Laine’s milestone was his second goal of the season and first since missing nine games with a concussion. It cut Detroit’s lead to 5-4 midway through the third, but the Jackets couldn’t pull even. Alexandre Texier and rookie Adam Fantilli scored the other two goals for Columbus.

“We saw a resilient team to come back in the game, but you can’t expect to win games with the mistakes we made … individual mistakes, a turnover and managing the puck,” Blue Jackets coach Pascal Vincent said. “Good teams will make you pay, like the last game (Thursday against Dallas) and this one.”

Spencer Martin started for Columbus and took the goaltending loss after allowing five goals on 28 shots. Ville Husso picked up the win after allowing four goals on 22 shots for the Red Wings, who improved to 2-0-0 against the Jackets this season.

Similar to the Jackets’ start last week at the Florida Panthers, the Blue Jackets were swarmed off the hop. They couldn’t keep the Red Wings out of their zone, and fell behind, 2-0, on goals by Raymond at 3:41 and Fabbri at 4:26 of the first period.

Mirroring what happened in Florida, the Jackets’ fourth line pulled them back into the game on Texier’s goal at 5:33, cutting Detroit’s lead to 2-1. Fantilli pulled Columbus even at 2-2 with 1:46 left, and Kuraly gave the Jackets a 3-2 lead at 5:41 of the second.

Detroit, which outshot Columbus 28-22, responded with three straight goals. DeBrincat and Sprong scored late in the second for a 4-3 lead and Fabbri’s second of the game made it 5-3 early in the third. It was just enough to win.

“It started with the start we had today,” Laine said. “It wasn’t exactly what we were looking for again, but we found our way back. We couldn’t hold onto the lead, which has been typical lately. That’s something we need to figure out. Just easy mistakes, myself included. We’ve just got to be able to make the simple plays and not always try something difficult.”

Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit Red Wings: turning point

Kuraly’s goal gave the Blue Jackets a big boost and a 3-2 lead early in the second, but a couple mistakes late in the period gave Detroit the lead back. DeBrincat’s goal was scored after Andrew Peeke’s turnover behind the Columbus net to make it 3-3 with 3:59 left in the period and Sprong scored 2:18 late to make it 4-3 after Kuraly turned it over just inside the Jackets’ blue line.

Fabbri scored his second of the game for a two-goal cushion early in the third, but Detroit’s back-to-back tallies to finish the second completely flipped momentum.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit Red Wings: play of the game

Fabbri would’ve had a hat trick had Martin not made a dazzling stick save at 3:48 of the first. Already down 1-0 on Raymond’s goal with the Red Wings buzzing early, Martin sprawled to make an incredible stop on Fabbri off a rebound of Joe Veleno’s redirection in front of the net.

Columbus Blue Jackets at Detroit Red Wings: notes

― Laine skated at right wing on the top line. His return plus Emil Bemstrom drawing back into the lineup made Yegor Chinakhov and Mathieu Olivier healthy scratches. Laine's return also required his activation from injured reserve, which prompted the Blue Jackets to assign rookie defenseman David Jiricek to AHL Cleveland before the game Saturday. Jiricek is expected to play for Cleveland on Sunday in Ottawa.

― Andrew Peeke played his third straight game after being scratched in 10 straight, skating with Adam Boqvist on the third pairing. Boqvist had also watched 10 straight games as a healthy scratch.

— Scouts and executives from 12 NHL teams were included on the pass list and watched the game closely in Detroit. That included three representatives of the Calgary Flames, including Flames president and CEO John Bean, whose son, defenseman Jake Bean, was scratched by the Blue Jackets for the first time this season.

— The Blue Jackets extended their streak of not allowing a power play goal to six games and now rank third in the NHL in penalty killing at 88.4% (38 of 43). Outside of two games allowing two power play goals on five times shorthanded, the Jackets are 33 of 34 in their other 12 games.
